Punchbowl Cemetary

The National Memorial cemetery of the Pacific is in an extinct volcano tuff cone. I took Grandma and Grandpa after dropping Eric off at school. I had not ever been before and it was a beautiful location for a cemetery.

There were several of these very detailed mosaics depicting all battles. It was neat.

Molokai

Monday (day after Justin's race) Justin and I went to Molokai by ourselves. Grandma and Grandpa took care of getting the kids to school and practice for us. It was a wonderful day full of adventure and beauty. We started the day by watching the sun rise from the plane and then on the way home saw a circle rainbow. It's a quick 25 minute flight and on clear days you can see Molokai from Bellows beach.

First thing we did was ride a mule down the highest sea cliffs in the world.

See how there's no one in front of me? Yep, I got to lead the way down!!

That's the area of land that they put all the people suffering from Leprosy (Hansen's Disease).

My mule's name was stripes!

We also drove around to the east side to the Halawa valley.

It was cloudy and very windy on this side.

Stripes liked to move pretty fast and I got WAY out in front of the group. So far ahead that I couldn't hear or see anyone on the 22 switchbacks. The guide did come and check on me though!

There were momma and baby goats on the path.

The water was gorgeous.

The disappointing part of the day was that we didn't get to tour the leper colony. The tour company that handles that didn't have a driver and no one told the mule company until we had reached the bottom. Oh well. It was still a great morning adventure.

Race day

Sunday (awhile back) was Justin's half marathon race. We all got up at 4:30 so we could get Justin to the starting ling and then find a spot to park. We waited in the car for a little while, reading, eating breakfast, and just waking up before heading over to mile 9 to watch for him.

They had a video of the finishing line that was on a 20 minute delay. You could get something to eat and drink then watch yourself cross the finish line!

Justin did very well, finishing with an average of 8:33 per mile!! He beat his time from last year so he was pleased. After leaving the race area we headed over to spend the rest of the day at Bellows.

We enjoyed sitting in the sunshine!

We had a picnic lunch.

We also went to the creek area and played in the waters there. Look how tall Caroline is getting! Up to my shoulders already!

The water draining out made a sharp left so Caroline and I 'cut the corner' seeing what would happen to the 'island' that was left. We made jettys with our arms and watched the erosion happen until our island was no more. It was pretty cool!

More race pictures. Our neighbor took this during the first couple miles of the race. The girl is a friend and the boy head in the bottom of the picture is of our 10 year old neighbor that ran the whole thing in 2:11!! And he is doing another half in a few weeks. Incredible!
